![]() Violence erupted in several evictions (the Sheep War) calling in question the patronage and influence of the Scottish Court Party in the Highlands. The Highland Clearances, the Scottish enclosure acts, affected Highlands and Islands in the evictions tenants that the Crofters' Party was formed to mobilize protest and resistance. Of the Rural Party some members and followers would became the Crofters' Party. Under the Presidencies of James Scott, 1st Duke of Monmouth (future Lord Protector) and Andrew Fletcher was a Scottish Court Party shaped in base of the interests of unionist landowners, merchants and bankers and Protesters and Cromwellians. The Covenanters focusing more on religious matters rather than political ones and divided in moderate (Resolutioners) and radical (Protesters) factions. They were primarily interested in maintaining their social status and economic interests, and might have seen the Commonwealth as a means to achieve that. The Commonwealth Royalists, former Highland Royalists who accepted the Commonwealth under the moderate leadership of Henry Cromwell and later James Scott. Their primary agenda was the maintenance of the union of Scotland with the Commonwealth of England under a republican form of government. Until the 1680s politics in Scotland followed a simlar pattern as in England with the major factions being the Cromwellian, Commonwealth or Protectorate Party (the union of the Army and Court factions) primarily composed of the military and administrative personnel who were put in after 1651.
